OCEANOGRAPHER
Across the sea wall
the grey lumpen sea; it could
never master language,
mouthfuls of pebbles and sand
tossed on the beach, weed
and crab claws; in the sea-
gardens too, words never dart
in a shoal, are never snapped up
by a grouper or shark; deep
in the garden of perpetual darkness
words don’t fall in a drizzle,
like husks of plankton, blurred
in the fizz of a hunting fish’s
lamp; only we, it seems,
are at a loss without them,
eyes blinded by glitter
on the water’s surface.
OCEANOGRAFO
Oltre la diga foranea
lo straccio grigio del mare; non potrebbe
mai padroneggiare il linguaggio,
bocconi di ciottoli e sabbia
scagliati sulla spiaggia, alghe
e chele di granchio; anche nei giardini
del mare le parole non guizzano
mai in banco, mai sono azzannate
da cernie o squali; nel folto
del giardino del buio perpetuo
le parole non cadono in pioggia leggera,
come strati di plancton, velati di spuma
nei guizzi di una lampada
di pesce predatore; solo noi, sembra,
siamo smarriti senza di loro,
con gli occhi accecati dallo scintillìo
sulla superficie dell’acqua.
I’LL SEE YOU TOMORROW
The tongue is such a warm deceptive instrument,
bel canto, bel canto; sometimes it sits in its purse,
brother and sister to the rest of the flesh; sometimes
it blurts out a considerable truth which is
embarrassing, to which the brain quietly says, I
never meant that; tongues are open to abuse,
dictators hate them; but, tongue says, there’s no such thing
as a loose tongue, look at my strong root; and it’s true,
if the tongue were a plant or a coral on a reef
we’d see how well it was anchored,
how confident its structures; when life has had donewith it,
it’s over to the teeth and the terrible jaw
to crack laughter out of the gap,
as if this weren’t a setback, and all that remains a dead white;
don’t worry, tongue says, I’ll always be here.
CI VEDIAMO DOMANI
vedremmo quant’era ben ancorata, quanto ne fossero
sicure le strutture; quando la vita ha chiuso con lei,
sta al dente e alla tremenda mascella
schioccare fuori la risata dal cavo, come
non fosse uno scacco, e resta soltanto un bianco morto;
non temere, dice la lingua, io ci sarò sempre.
THE SUN IS SHINING
Get the old men up,
no sleeping in chairs, out
to the bluebell wood
and the thin shimmer of its
scent; get them up, no
shuffling in slippers to the
kitchen to glance at the clock;
get them up, the buzzard
in a deft swoop grapples
the rabbit; life never is past
tense (the photograph
album is memory’s arthrit-
is); get them up.
IL SOLE SPLENDE
Svegliate i vecchi,
vietato dormire sulle sedie, fuori
verso il bosco delle campanule
e il riverbero lieve del loro
profumo; svegliateli, vietato
strascicare in pantofole verso
la cucina a guardar l’orologio;
svegliateli, la poiana
in picchiata abilmente
afferra il coniglio; la vita non si declina
mai al passato (le foto
nell’album sono un’artrite
della memoria); svegliateli.
GOSPEL
They found God’s tomb
carved out of granite
in a cave in the desert hills;
when rubble and dust had
been removed they saw a hawk
painted in gold, its foot
on the neck of a sparrow;
scientists said Stand back,
and bombarded it with X-
rays, developing a photo
of emptiness; Holy, holy, holy,
chanted the priests, He is
risen again; it was breaking news
supplanting wars and riots,
but what to do with an
empty tomb; Move on, move on there,
the sergeant said,
wafting a lazy hand; Move
on, there’s nothing to see here.
GOSPEL
Trovarono la tomba di Dio
scavata nel granito
in una cava delle colline deserte;
quando polvere e pietrisco furono
stati rimossi videro un falco
dipinto in oro, le zampe
sul collo di un passero;
gli scienziati dissero Indietro,
per bombardarlo di raggi
X, e sviluppare una foto
del vuoto; Santo, santo, santo
salmodiarono i preti, Lui è
risorto; fu una notizia tanto esplosiva
da soppiantare guerre e rivolte,
ma che farsene di una
tomba vuota; Andate, andate via,
disse il sergente,
sollevando una mano indolente; Andate
qui non c’è nulla da vedere.
WE LOOKED EVERYWHERE
Where’s Old
Tricky; behind the Moon?
but no, there was
nothing in the dark impact
craters; perhaps on Mars;
there were no spiritual
footprints in the desert of
stones; the Sun? just a
furnace of physics; what about
those fingers of light walking across
the bay? the Sun again,
its blind hands feeling
for the Earth’s green
face; Old Tricky, come out!
is he in the clouds; but
the clouds bring only rain,
and again tomorrow, rain;
what should we do; faith,
says the preacher, and
perhaps good deeds;
in the afternoon he goes for a
swim, delighting in the buoyancy
of flesh.
GUARDAMMO OVUNQUE
Dov’è il Vecchio
Furbone; dietro la Luna?
ma no, non c’era
nulla nel buio cratere
d’impatto; forse su Marte;
non c’erano impronte
spirituali nel deserto delle
pietre; il Sole? Solo una
fornace di fisica; che dire
di queste dita di luce in cammino
attraverso la baia? Il Sole di nuovo,
le sue mani cieche esplorano
al tatto il viso verde
della Terra; Vecchio Furbone, vieni fuori!
è forse nelle nubi; ma
le nubi portano pioggia soltanto,
e di nuovo domani, pioggia;
che dovremmo fare; fede,
dice il predicatore, e
buone azioni forse;
nel pomeriggio va a farsi
una nuotata, godendo della galleggiabilità
della carne.
THE STORY SO FAR
I’m not sure anything
could be said when God’s
coffin was winched from the Marianas
Trench, streaming water, panelled
with gold where gazelles
pricked their ears and a sabre-
tooth padded; there were humans
too, in gold, holding hands;
These are my works, omnia
animalia sunt, it said on the
lid; the captain gave a signal and the
winch let slip the coffin
that splashed then sank
as in a watery mirror through the
blue, until it disappeared
with the last threads of light
into the trench’s depths.
LA STORIA FINORA
Non sono sicuro che ci fosse
qualcosa da dire quando l’argano
estrasse la tomba di Dio dalla Fossa
delle Marianne, grondante, placcata
d’oro dove gazzelle
rizzarono le orecchie e una tigre
dai denti a sciabola andava
a passo felpato; c’erano anche
umani, in oro, a stringere mani;
Queste sono le mie opere, omnia
animalia sunt, era scritto sul
coperchio; il capitano diede un segnale e
l’argano lasciò scivolare la bara
che cadde nell’acqua e affondò
come in un liquido specchio
nell’azzurro, finché scomparve
con le ultime scie di luce
negli abissi della fossa.
UNCONDITIONAL
Heaven and Earth shall pass away,
but my words shall not pass away.
After humans
what happened to the words,
did birds make nests with them,
did ants carry them off
mistaking them for leaves;
after the Earth
did they float with debris
in space, twisting and turning
in the light of distant stars;
after the universe
did they come home to God
who sat deaf-mute,
astounded at all the things
they had said.
INCONDIZIONATO
Cielo e terra spariranno,
ma le mie parole non spariranno.
Dopo gli esseri umani
che accadde alle parole,
forse gli uccelli ne fecero nidi,
le formiche le trasportarono via
scambiandole per foglie;
dopo la Terra
fluttuarono coi detriti
nello spazio, volteggiando e girando
nella luce di stelle distanti;
dopo l’universo
rincasarono presso Dio
che sedeva sordomuto,
sbalordito da tutto ciò
che avevano detto.

Today, after This John Barnie’s Book
So far so far so far
Today the human words
And pain and “swish”
Of holy swords
Are, and the name of God
Is God just when He sleeps,
Is God just when He doesn’t
look at us. Or He’s not In.
